Some would say that our society has become less formal as the years have passed. It was once the case, for instance, that any man would be expected to wear a hat when in public. Times have certainly changed and expectations of what is normal have been transformed.
Despite this, there are some occasions where we might be expected to wear particular items of clothing. If we're attending a wedding, for example, then it would probably be strange if we arrived wearing a T-shirt and some ripped jeans. So it's clear that there are some rules that we have to think about when wearing clothing.
It's the same when it comes to footwear. We may think that we have freedom to choose to wear any shoes that we may choose, but the reality is likely to be that some shoes will be better suited than others to particular occasions. Once again, thinking about weddings can provide us with a good example of this. Few of us would choose to wear trainers to a wedding.
It may be the same in your place of work. If you work in an office and you're expected to wear business clothes then it may well be frowned upon if you wear more informal footwear. Even where there aren't written rules about dress and uniform, you may find that other people judge you, at least to some extent, based on what you're wearing.
This helps to explain why many people feel that it's important to have a wide range of shoes available. That way, you'll always have something to wear for every occasion. You'll probably need at least four styles of shoes to ensure that you can cover different situations and weather conditions.
When you're buying shoes, don't forget to think about what you'll feel comfortable wearing. Formal shoes needn't be uncomfortable. Don't feel that you have to choose shoes that look good but that you won't enjoy wearing.
Always think about your feet, as well as the occasion. The important thing is to make sure that you end up with a wide selection of shoes that you're happy with.
